Good cornhole rules should settle questions before the first bag is thrown. This version keeps the official scoring structure intact and makes the sequence easy to call at a tailgate, school event, company tournament, or backyard game.
The game in one frame
- Each player or team has four bags of one color.
- Players at the same board alternate underhand pitches until all eight bags have been thrown.
- Stay in the same pitching lane for the frame and release the bag before stepping beyond the front edge of the board.
- Score the frame, clear the boards, and begin the next frame from the opposite end.
Score what remains after cancellation
A bag resting on the board is worth one point. A bag that passes completely through the hole is worth three. Add each side's points, subtract the lower total from the higher total, and award only the difference.
A traditional game ends when a player or team reaches or exceeds 21 at the end of a frame. The familiar "bust back" rule is a house variation, not part of the standard ACO or ACL win condition. If your group wants to use it, agree before play starts.
Keep the turn clean
- The side that scored in the previous frame pitches first in the next frame.
- A bag that hits the ground before coming to rest on the board is dead and should be removed before another pitch.
- A pitch made after crossing the foul line or outside the pitching box is a foul.
- Do not move bags already on the board until the frame is complete. A later bag may legally push another bag into the hole.
A thirty-second pregame call
Confirm the target score, whether cancellation scoring is in use, which foul line applies, and whether any house variations are active. Then flip or otherwise choose the opening side and play. That short conversation prevents nearly every common rules dispute.
